Elephants and Trains
Few countries can provide North Americans with such a rich, diverse experience as Thailand. Come visit friendly, warm people in a culture unlike any we have seen. Our great adventure will see us traveling by jet, train, motorcoach, jumbo elephant, river raft and of course our own two feet. This way we taste and feel Thai culture. We overnight in two distinct Thai villages and immerse ourselves, for a brief time, in their way of life. Life is sparse with great moments-why not experience more.

Day 1  Flight from your gateway.  Cross the international date line en route.

Day 2 Arrive in beautiful Bangkok, Thailand. Transfer to Manohra Hotel, or similar.

Day 3 Morning will find us at leisure, melting into Thai culture. Tour the Royal Grand Palace, and the Emerald Buddha Temple this afternoon.

Day 4 Morning free to shop and explore this city of waterways and temples. Late afternoon we transfer to the railway station to board our modern, A/C, overnight sleeper train to Chiang Mai in Northern Thailand.

Day 5 Chiang Mai. Upon arrival to Chiang Mai, a 3 hour drive through plains and curves, steep drops, and dramatic plunging valleys bring our group to Mae Taeng District, located between Chiang Rai and Mae Hong Son cities. From there a two hour trek over northern hills delivers us to a "Lisu" Village. Spend the evening learning of this tribe's customs and daily lives. Enjoy dinner and stay overnight with a Lisu family in their home.

Day 6 Mae Taeng. We depart for a steep three hour trek through dense forests to the "Skaw Karen" Village. After lunch here, we climb aboard a live Jumbo Elephant for a two hour odyssey to a "White Karen" Village. The evening will be shared with the natives including dinner and overnight in the village. Oh, we shall have great stories to tell back in Canada.

Day 7 Mae Taeng/Chiang Mai. Step onto our river raft for a 4 hour sail down the Mae Taeng River, through it's curves and rapids. Feast on lunch at the river lodge, after which we return to Chiang Mai. Transfer to the Riverside Hotel on the Ping River. Shop nearby market.

Day 8 Chiang Mai/Bangkok. Join our morning tour of Chiang Mai, transfer to the railway station for our overnight sleeper train to Bangkok.

Day 9 Bangkok. Meet and transfer to Manohra Hotel. Day at leisure in Bangkok, or for those non-stop adventurers we can take an optional tour by bus to Ayutthaya. We then visit the ruins of Ayutthaya and return by the Oriental Queen on the Chao Phyra River with Buffet lunch. A most enjoyable experience. Alternately visit Pattaya or the Crocodile Farm.

Day 10 Transfer to Bangkok airport for our journey homeward.  Flights can be pre-arranged to travel via Tokyo, if desired.
