Day 1    Flight departs to San Jose, Costa Rica. We are greeted at the airport by our friendly staff and transferred directly to the mountain suburb of Heredia. While getting acquainted with our tour guide and our new surroundings enjoy a sumptuous fare of fresh fruit, pastries and fruit drinks. Overnight at the Posada de la Montana.

Day 2   A hearty breakfast will prepare us for an incredible day! Our group will transfer directly to the magnificent Topiary Gardens of Zarcero, on the way to the mighty slopes of the Arenal Volcano, Costa Rica’s most active volcano. At Fortuna, standing at the base of the volcano, we begin the hike to a pristine waterfall, which pours out of the rain forest. Swim in the beautiful pools at the base of the waterfall. Bathe in the delightful Tabacon Hot Springs. Words cannot describe the sensation of splashing in hotspring streams, waterfalls, and pools of swirling water. With clear weather we can witness the almost constant eruption of Arenal Volcano. It is truly Magical! Overnight Cabinas Rossi or similar.

Day 3    We explore La Selva Rain Forest Reserve. A local naturalist guide will explain the rain forest and the interplay of its many unique inhabitants. Watch Leafcutter Ants carving a path through the forest in their relentless harvest of the jungle. Keep a sharp eye out for monkeys high in the trees. La Selva is renowned worldwide for its research efforts. Overnight in the Hotel Bambu or similar.

Day 4   Imagine winding down a clear, calm river through virgin rainforests, absorbing the sights and sounds of the jungle. Hear the chatter of wild animals on the banks of the river and high in the tropical canopy above. The Sarapiqui River awaits us today and will allow us a brief foray into the heart of the rainforest. Our first glimpse of the Caribbean Sea will enchant us. Before sunset we'll have time to splash in its warm, calm waters. We spend the first of two overnights at the Yare Hotel (or similar). This is a delightful hotel with canopy walkways and an open-air restaurant. Hummingbirds and colorful tropical birds are commonly seen here.

Day 5   Yet another amazing day awaits. Enjoy another hearty breakfast and drive past banana plantations and farms to Cahuita National Park. This natural haven is and ideal place to explore the tropical wet rain forest, and to catch a glimpse of sloths, toucans and monkeys! Savor a delicious native Caribbean lunch at Miss Edith's. Later snorkel the most beautiful reefs in Costa Rica. We spend the afternoon kayaking. Kayaks are much more agile and stable than canoes and everyone will enjoy the experience of gliding effortlessly over the calm waters.

Day 6   Another incredible day awaits! We promise that this is one of those days you will always remember. With an early start we hike to Punta Mona (Monkey Point) where we experience the Afro-Caribbean culture. This hike is unbelievable, as our native guide leads us through virgin forest and points out the numerous animals and indigenous flora. Upon arrival to Punta Mona our time will be spent snorkeling, and gathering local fruits and vegetables for the evening feast. As an excersize in sustainable living, all food will be caught in the ocean or harvested from our experimental gardens where 180 varieties of fruits and vegetables are grown. Rest assured, no one will go hungry. In the evening observe the nesting rituals of the giant Green and Leatherback turtles (March through June). These turtles can grow as large as 1700 pounds. People come from all over the world to witness the turtles. You may be lucky enough to see fireflies by the thousands, twinkling like earth-bound stars in the night. It's a good thing they weigh a lot less than Leatherback Turtles. Camp overnight at Punta Mona, only a few miles from the Panama border.

Day 7  After breakfast on the beach we return to Manzanilla by motorboat and spend the morning exploring the fabulous gardens in Puerto Viejo. You will be amazed by the variety of fruit trees and exotic plants. As an alternative to the gardens of Puerto Viejo the group can visit a Butterfly Farm. Keep a sharp eye open for one of the worlds most beautiful butterflies - The fabulous Blue Morpho.

Day 8   Today we transfer to the airport for our flight home. Bid a fond Adios to the guides who have become our friends and look forward to the lucky day we return to beautiful Costa Rica. You’ll be glad you took so many pictures.

An optional one-day extension would include a visit to the wonder known as POAS! Its twin craters cradle lakes of brilliant blue and smoky white. The lakes are said to change colors with the mood of the mountains beneath. We will also have the pleasure of visiting a coffee plantation and learn about production of the world's finest coffee. This extra day costs only $75.00 per person
